Abstract
The great religion of Islam, as the last divine religion and the most complete program for the man’s felicity in this and the other world, presents practical methods for planning of the daily affairs and issues of life. In the original Islamic sources, the ‘lifestyle’ can be traced by using the keywords of adab (=manner) and sunnat (tradition); and in the sphere of morality and religious precepts, one can seek to find, in addition to manners and traditions, the related issues and knowledge. Muslim thinkers also have, since long ago, concerned themselves with explanation and compilation in this sphere. One of the deficiencies of the recent studies on lifestyle is paying no heed to or not making use of the heritage of lifestyle in the Islamic history, civilization and culture. This means that by supposing lifestyle as a newly emergent issue, no one has dealt with the background of these discussion in Islamic works or has dealt in a passing and imperfect way.
The present study aims at showing that Muslim thinkers have concerned themselves with explanation and compilation in this sphere. Accordingly, we have first introduced Islamic works in this sphere and have classified them into three styles of ‘historiography’, ‘transmitted ethics’ and ‘integrative ethics’. Then, we have enumerated the features of each.
Keywords: Lifestyle, Manners, Morality, Muslim Thinkers, Review of Literature.
