Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship of death anxiety with religiosity in the Islamic context of Iranian university students. In doing so, Islamic sources were reviewed which resulted in proposing a hypothesis of the relationship between death anxiety and religiosity among the Muslims. In this hypothesis, religion uses thoughts about what may happen to people afterlife to motivate them to commit to religious teachings and therefore acquire what needed for a good life in the afterlife. 402 college students completed Muslim Attitude towards Religious Scale, Religious Orientation Scale-Revised, Religious Quest Orientation Scale, and Death Anxiety Scale. Results showed that death anxiety was positively correlated to religious attitudes and extrinsic personal religiosity. These findings were interpreted in support of the hypothesis driven from the Islamic sources. The adaptive role of death anxiety in behavior change as well as its possible role in psychological health has been discussed.
